Tracy Aviary is the largest and oldest of only two free-standing aviaries in the nation. Located at 589 East 1300 South in Salt Lake City, it has an 80-year history and has grown to be a cultural landmark, a popular attraction and an educational and conservational leader in the community. The Aviary is home to over 400 birds.
The Aviary works to provide educational programs for over 60,000 children every year. Through the use of hand-on experiences both in classrooms and out in neighborhoods, camps, classes and interactive exhibits these educational experiences are making a difference with children. The children get an appreciation for many of the wonders of our natural world. Birds from as far away as the Andes Mountains in South America to as close as our backyards are used in many of these encounters.
Tracy Aviary also works to study and develop conservation initiatives to better understand and appreciate the variety of bird species and ecosystems in the natural world. This understanding is then used by volunteers to help influence the many decisions that influence our environment such as in urban development, open space design, and species survival. All of these efforts are to assist in preserving our local natural beauty and diversity for our generation and for those who will come after us.
All kinds of events are sponsored by the Aviary to help each person’s connection to nature. You can find lunchtime lecture series meetings, organized bird watching outings throughout the year, bird count outings, active workshops involving adults and children, grandparents’ days, and much more.
Guests can experience the indoor bird show where they get to witness trained birds flying overhead, watch and participate in interactive experiences and get to know some of the trained celebrities of the Aviary. The shows are free and you don’t want to miss them. See the website for more details.
You can participate in the Aviary Nose to Beak experiences where guests get an opportunity to be up close and personal with all different kind of birds. Each day there are opportunities with the pelicans, the rainforest birds and an exhibit experience. Customized and personal “Book-In-Advance” Nose to Beak Experiences are also available with flamingos, raptors, a general behind the scenes tour, with cranes, with a condor, and more.
Additionally, the Aviary offers such activities as classes for children, a Christmas bird count for kids, outreach programs, field trips, school break camps, a nature in the city event, taking flight nights and a Jordan River Nature Center is currently under development. The recent approval for a second location at the Jordan River will be a wonderful resource connecting our community with the outdoors. It will offer educational workshops, activities for children, birding, hiking, or enjoying the wonders of nature along the Jordon River.
If you, or anyone in your family, has an interest in birds then you certainly don’t want to miss spending some time at this impressive Tracy Aviary location.
The Aviary can host your event at its unique venue. Look no further for your personal or business events. Weddings, proposals, birthday parties, private parties, and all sorts of events can be accommodated. Just contact the rental coordinator at the Aviary.
