This is the Place Heritage Park, is a Utah State Park located in Salt Lake City at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. It is a 450-acre site that offers guests an experience in the life and times of 19th Century Utah during the period from the arrival of the Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake valley to the time Utah became a state—1847 to 1896. Step back in time as you enjoy Utah in its early history stages. Visitors to the park, which is open year-round, will enjoy an immersive educational, entertaining and non-denominational experience.
Brigham Young led the Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley in the summer of 1847. As they arrived in the valley, Brigham Young was sick in the back of his wagon. It was at this location where he looked over the valley and declared, “This is the right place. Drive on.” The This is the Place monument in the park commemorates the historic occasion. The Heritage Village built near the monument represents many of the early settlements in the Utah territory.
In the Heritage Village area within the park, you will be able to walk through the village and explore life in the early history of the Utah territory. There are cabins, chapels, stables, barns saddleries, blacksmith shops, leatherworkers, blacksmiths, spinsters, and leatherworkers. You can the workers as they work their crafts and ask them questions.
There is also the Native American Village within the park. Here you will learn about many of the early Native Americans who inhabited the region. You’ll explore Shoshone teepees, Navajo Hogans and also hear stories, watch rugs being made, and even participate in sand-painting and arrowhead crafts that are available.
There are pony rides to enjoy. An irrigation station with a fun splash pad to enjoy during the warm summer weather. Three different trains are in the park. Each takes visitors through different parts of the park while the conductors provide historical content of each area. One of the train routes includes a ride around the park’s pond which is a natural-spring-fed water feature that is the source of water for the park’s crops and animals.
Throughout the park you will also find many monuments and sculptures depicting various events from the pioneer heritage and from Western history.
On the food side there are a few choices. The Donut Shop is the place to go to fill up your bag with some of Brigham’s donuts. The ZCMI General Store is a gift shop that sells toys, gifts and old-fashion candy that the kids will love. Then there is The Huntsman Grill for burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, fries and, of course, ice cream. The Grill is inside a restored building that once was the historical Huntsman Hotel.
The Park is also available for a variety of events including parties, weddings and receptions, family gatherings, business events and other group events.
During the various seasons the Park also sponsors a variety its own special events. There is always a lot going on. This Park is perfect for a day of family fun and exploration.
