A little known botanical garden is hidden in Salt Lake City. Part of Jordan Park and situated along the scenic Jordan River, the International Peace Gardens is worth of a visit. The garden is comprised of various plots allocated to different countries and cultures which chose to participate. Each participant then created a garden with plants from their native lands and architecture, sculptures and designs typical of their homeland and culture. The idea was to include various countries in an attempt to foster peace and friendship among all nations. There are now 28 different garden areas which makes for a peaceful stroll as visitors meander through the beautiful settings.
The 11-acre area is located between 9th West and 10th South in Salt Lake City along the banks of the Jordan River and adjoining the Jordon River Parkway. The Garden was originally conceived in 1939 and eventually became part of a city beautification project for the 1947 city centennial celebration. Although there was a delay caused by World War II, the project was finally completed and dedicated in 1952.
Each nationality allocated a section was responsible for the design, creation and planting at their own expense. All plans had to be approved by the City Parks Department before they were planted. Once they were completed, they were dedicated and presented to the city which then assumed the ongoing maintenance of the garden.
The first country to be represented in the garden creation was the United States. Then the Japanese garden followed and over the creation period the other countries joined until there were a total of 28 different countries involved. Unfortunately, the space was then fully occupied and other interested parties had to be turned away.
Admission is free to all.
