Hogle Zoo is located at the mouth of Emigration Canyon in Salt Lake City. The address is 2600 Sunnyside Avenue. There the zoo occupies 42 acres of space. (pronounced “ho-gul”) which land was originally donated to the city by Mr. And Mrs. James A. Hogle back in 1931. The zoo is owned by the city of Salt Lake City and currently includes exhibited mammals, reptiles and birds from around the world.
Hogle Zoo has the honor bestowed on only 10% of all American zoos—that of being accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (the AZA). Therefore, it must meet strict standards relating to guest service requirement, education and animal care. Also every exhibit has to be approved and even the food and nutritional supplements fed to the animals must be approved. In fact, the AZA actually owns all the animals in AZA zoos and any animal transfers are only done with other AZA zoos.
The Hogle Zoo is one of the top destinations when it comes to family fun. There are over 800 different animals on display in the beautiful mountain canyon setting. You will find mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, spiders and other forms of life.
The largest and newest exhibit opened in 2014—the African Savanna. This 4.5-acre exhibit features a grassland setting zebra, nyala, ostrich and giraffe animals mingle about while the lions watch from their nearby Lion’s Hill exhibit.
The Asian Highlands exhibit recreates a village from the Himalayas and in it you can find five different Asian cats—all endangered species. Among them is the Amur tiger, which is the largest wild cat in the world today. It is formally known as the Siberian Tiger.
Other popular attractions include the Rocky Shores, the Elephant Encounter, the Great Apes enclosure, the Primate Forest, the Small Animal Building and the Tidewater Cover splash area which is so popular with the kids.
Staff put on daily programs at various times during the year. They often feature a wildlife bird show, have an elephant encounter program, put on sea lion/seal training and have a Discovery Theater where visitors can enjoy a fun, interactive program with the staff and some of the animals.
The zoo is open year-round and there is always a busy event schedule planned. The winter months feature ZooLights after dark, free admission days often in November, December and January, children craft events and Tot Tuesdays. There is always something going on at the Salt Lake Hogle Zoo. You can plan your visits around the daily events or scheduled programs to get more out of the visit.
